Chapter 12

He drives to Manhattan as fast as he possibly can, unappreciative of the view that he's driving into.  He didn't care.  He's seen the city sky line many time and at various times during the day/night.

There is one place that he wants to be and that's all that he can focus on.  He knows that Olivia is at work.  She loved the night shift on the weekends, because that's when she got to see and treat the cool stuff.  She was all about blood and guts and he thought that was cute.

The streets of Manhattan are always filled with people, whether they be on foot, on bicycle or in a car - but tonight seemed to be worse than most.  Jon's starting to feel a little road rage and anxiety as he knows that he's close and can't get there fast enough.  He knows that she's in the middle of a shift and that she always loved when he would just show up.  To her, that was the 'little things'.  The little things that he didn't do enough and he truly hopes that it's not too late.

He pulls into the first available spot in the parking lot, caring even less that it was handicapped.  He tells himself, "It's just a ticket."  Locks the car and runs into the emergency room doors.  As they slid open, they made a sound and people in the waiting room looked up, as we all do.  To see who's coming in and if you can figure out their injury or illness.  Just in the door, far enough that the sensor doesn't detect him, he stands there and looks left and then right.  And then he heard, "Oh my God, that's Jon Bon Jovi."

Looking in the direction of the excited woman, Jon quickly assess his best plan of action.  One woman and her excited utterance could cause chaos in the emergency room, however, when he sees that there are only a handful of people - he doesn't get concerned.  He thinks to himself, I hate the smell of this place.

At the registration window he asks the nurse, "Where is Dr. Olivia?"

The nurse can't talk, she's a stuttering mess.  All she can do is point.  She directs him down the hallway that leads to the trauma rooms and he takes his leave, chuckling about the nurse.  When he gets to the trauma room door, he looks through the window and can see that Olivia and a team are working a patient.  She is covered in blood and barking out orders.  Everyone does exactly as she says, when she says it. Jon hates the sight of blood and  the thought of what she does, but he can't look away.  He is watching the woman that he loves, do what she loves and that makes him love her even more.  He admires her dedication and her willingness to got he extra mile for all of her patients, not just the privileged like the Bongiovi's.

He watches them through the window until he knows that she has seen him.  Once he knows that she knows he's there, he takes a seat in the small waiting room just outside the trauma room doors.  He's in there with one other person that is anxiously waiting to hear the news, he guesses, of the person that Olivia is working on.  Over the loud speaker they hear, "Code Blue, Trauma 1.  Code Blue Trauma 1."  The lady that's in the waiting room starts to sob, everyone knows what code blue means.  Jon can't help but feel for the lady, so he tries to reassure her.  "The best doctor is in there."

The lady nods, through her sobs.  Jon doesn't know that she doesn't speak English.  It was then that a team ran by with the crash cart and went into the trauma room that Olivia was commanding.  They could hear what they were doing and they could hear that it wasn't sounding promising.  Jon could hear Olivia, "Charging.......Clear."  over and over.  He heard her say that 8 times and then after the 8th he heard someone say, "You got her back.  Good job."

The team with Olivia continued what they were doing, as Jon sat with the lady that cried and cried.  He was getting to the point where he was getting uncomfortable, hoping that Olivia would come out soon.  He reaches over and picks up a copy of National Geographic and starts to thumb through it's pages, waiting.

He makes it through the entire magazine before he sees another person.  It's been him and the lady of the loved one in the trauma room for what felt like forever.  He hears the door open and he looks up.  It's Olivia.  She stripping off her cap, gloves and gown and throws them in the biohazard bag.  As she walks into the waiting room, she sees Jon and smiles.

"When did you get here?" she asks him as she sits next to him.  Jon can see that she's pretty stressed and that the patient that she just worked took it's toll on her.  He reaches up and pushes back some bangs that fell into her eyes.  "Just before you seen me."

Olivia looks at the woman crying and gets up.  She walks over and takes a seat next to her and starts talking to her in Spanish.  Jon had no idea that she knew Spanish, but he was able to pick out a few words.  Olivia tells the lady what she needs to tell her and then goes back to Jon.  Olivia must have told the lady that whoever the patient is will be okay, because the lady calmed down.

"Did someone call you?" she asks Jon.

"No.  I came here because I didn't like the way things were left in Jersey and my mom and dad told me to come." Telling her that, he winks at her.

"No one called you?" she asks again.  Jon can see that she's shaken and exhausted.  He notices that her eyes are glassy and that she's almost checking out.

"No, why?  Is someone supposed to call me?"

"Jon, that's Jesse in there."
